St Clement Danes Church part three
About this podcast
These four podcasts focus on the stunning Anglican church of St
Clement Danes in the Strand, and discuss its reconstruction following
destruction in the London Blitz as the central church of the Royal Air
Force. Comparisons are drawn with Coventry Cathedral and the
Frauenkirche in Dresden, two other important bombed churches, and the
controversy over the erection of a statue of the head of RAF Bomber
Command outside the church is discussed.
Ideally, they are intended to be listened to while visiting the
church, with the specific locations for listening to each of the four
parts being indicated on the map of the church to be found at the St Clement Danes Podcast pages
mounted by the History Department of King’s College London, who
produced this podcast. However, it is possible to enjoy and profit from
the podcasts even if you are unable to visit the museum: in this case
you should still visit the St Clement Danes Podcast pages
to see images of the objects and views discussed, as well as further
information on the participants and suggested weblinks and further
reading.
The participants are Professors Arthur Burns and Ben Quash and Dr James E Bjork of King’s College London
Part three: International dimensions of commemoration in St Clement Danes; Church and memorial at St Clement Danes; handling the memory of the Luftwaffe in Germany; Coventry's centre for international reconciliation.
